Horizon Europe
The new Horizon Europe Programme is the Commission's proposal for a research and innovation funding programme with more than €95 billion for the period 2021-2027. The objectives of the programme are to strengthen the EU's scientific and technological bases, to respond to citizens' priorities, to uphold Europe's values and socio-economic model, and to boost Europe's innovation capacity, competitiveness and employment.
To this end, it is structured in 3 pillars and a cross-cutting section with measures to support Member States in broadening participation and strengthening the European Research Area.
- Pillar 1. Excellent science: aims to increase the scientific competitiveness of the European Union. Pillar I includes the European Research Council actions, Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions and Research Infrastructures.
- Pillar 2. Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness, organised around thematic clusters, aims to boost key technologies and solutions underpinning EU policies and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This pillar includes 6 clusters:
- Cluster 1: Health
- Cluster 2: Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society
- Cluster 3: Civil Security for Society
- Cluster 4: Digital World, Industry and Space
- Cluster 5: Climate, Energy and Mobility
- Cluster 6: Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment
- Pillar 3. Innovative Europe: which aims to stimulate breakthrough and market-creating innovations and innovation-enabling ecosystems. Pillar III consists of the European Innovation Council, the European Innovation Ecosystems and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
- Cross-cutting pillar aimed at widening participation and strengthening the European Research Area.
