The European Research Council (ERC) seeks to provide long-term funding for excellent researchers and their research teams to carry out novel and potentially highly profitable but high-risk research. Its specific objective is to "strengthen the excellence, dynamism and creativity of European research".
There are three main ERC calls. They are:
| Starting Grants | Research support grants for junior researchers |
| Consolidator Grants | Grants for research support for researchers in consolidation |
| Advanced Grants | Research support grants for senior researchers |
