Horizon 2020
The European Union concentrated a large part of its research and innovation activities in the Framework Programme, which this year was called Horizon 2020 (H2020). In the period 2014-2020 and through the implementation of three pillars, it contributed to addressing major societal challenges, promoted industrial leadership in Europe and strengthened the excellence of its science base. The available budget amounted to €76.88 billion.
Horizon 2020 integrated for the first time all phases from knowledge generation to activities closer to the market: basic research, technology development, demonstration projects, pilot manufacturing lines, social innovation, technology transfer, proof of concept, standardisation, pre-commercial public procurement support, venture capital and guarantee scheme.
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) became part of Horizon 2020 and through its Knowledge Communities (KICs) integrated research, training and business creation activities.
